About the Queen’s Beasts Silver Coins

In 2016, The Royal Mint released an intriguing new British silver coin series – the 2 oz. Queen’s Beasts Silver Coin – also available in ¼ oz. and 1 oz. gold versions. This 2 oz. size fine silver bullion coin is a premier for the exceptional British Mint, which has a minting history of over 1,000 years. This silver coin series also consists of the first UK bullion coins struck from 99.99% pure silver. The Queen’s Beasts Coins were inspired by the magnificent coronation ceremony of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, which took place in Westminster Abbey in 1953. Her ceremony was guarded by ten six feet tall heraldic beasts symbolizing the various strands of royal ancestry. The statues were sculpted by James Woodford RA who was inspired by the King’s Beasts of Henry VIII. The original statues of the Queen’s Beasts can be found today in the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec. James Woodford also created their stone replicas which you can admire in the Kew Gardens in the UK. Jody Clark, the remarkably talented and highly-praised Royal Mint coin designer, got inspired by these mythical creatures (lions, falcon, griffin, bull, greyhound, yale, unicorn, dragon, and horse) and created new versions for their depictions on the Queen’s Beasts Silver Coins. The new representations are based on his research about the origins of the coats of arms and heraldry, which he tried to replicate into a dynamic version, yet keeping the same sense of courage and strength. For this reason, these silver coins are artistic coinage pieces minted within an extraordinary concept, making them a unique addition to your portfolio.

The Design and Size of the Queen’s Beasts Silver Coins

The Queen’s Beasts Silver Coins are issued by the British Royal Mint in only one size option of 2 troy ounes. Unique to its predecessors, the Queen’s Beasts Coins are exceptional silver bullion being the first .9999 pure silver coins struck by the prestigious mint and also the first UK silver bullion coins which weigh 2 oz. The Queen’s Beasts Silver Coins carry stunning obverse and reverse designs created by the remarkable British coin designer Jody Clark. On the obverse side of each coin is depicted the new effigy of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, which is the latest, fifth iteration of Her right profile portrait. The obverse side of Queen’s Beasts Silver Coins also contains the words “ELIZABETH II D.G. REG. F.D”, which is the short version of the phrase “Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen, and Defender of the Faith” and the coin’s denomination of 5 Pounds. On the reverse side of the Queen’s Beasts Silver Coins is depicted one of the 10 Heraldic Beasts. The first coin issued within the series in 2016 showcases a new representation of the Lion of England. The majestic lion is displayed with the heraldic shield in front of it while standing on its hind legs, being encircled by the weight and purity inscriptions and the year of mintage. The next silver coins within the Queen’s Beasts series will feature the following heraldic beasts on their reverse side: the Griffin of Edward III, the Falcon of the Plantagenets, the White Lion of Mortimer, the Black Bull of Clarence, the Yale of Beaufort, the White Greyhound of Richmond, the Red Dragon of Wales, the Unicorn of Scotland, and the White Horse of Hanover.
