Mexican Gold Coins - Pesos & Libertads

Mexican Gold Coins: A Rich Legacy of Precious Metals

Mexico has been a major source of gold and silver for over 500 years, thanks to its vast and rich deposits of precious metals. Mexican Gold Coins are highly prized and rare, making them some of the most sought-after bullion products on the market. One of the earliest and most iconic of these coins is the Gold Centenario, first minted in 1921 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Mexican Independence. Made from 1.2 oz of .900 fine gold with a face value of 50 Pesos, the Centenario was in circulation from 1921 to 1931 and again between 1943 and 1947. While coins minted after 1947 are reproductions bearing the 1947 date, they still maintain a high collectible value due to their stunning design and historical importance. These coins, along with the newer Mexican Libertad, have made Mexican Gold Coins highly appreciated by collectors and investors worldwide.

The Mexican Mint: La Casa de Moneda de México

The Mexican Mint, or “La Casa de Moneda de México,” is one of the oldest mints in the world, founded in 1535 by decree of the Spanish Crown. Following Spain's conquest of the Aztec Empire, the establishment of the Mexican Mint was a key step in expanding the colonial empire into gold- and silver-rich American territories. Under the Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, the mint served not just Mexico but also territories like Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, and the Philippines. The mint’s early products included the Mexican Peso, maravedis, reals, and the Spanish eight-real coin, which later inspired the development of global currencies like the U.S. dollar, Japanese yen, and Chinese yuan. After Mexico gained independence in 1821, the Mexican National Central Bank, Banco de Mexico, took control of the mint in 1925. The facility later moved to San Luis Potosi, with the original production building now serving as the Mexican National Cultural Museum.

Mexican Gold Coins: Sizes and Designs

Mexican Gold Coins come in a variety of sizes, reflecting the diverse history of Mexican coinage. Older coins like the Mexican Gold Pesos were struck in uncommon sizes, ranging from 0.0482 oz for the 2 Pesos coin to 1.2057 oz for the 50 Pesos coin, all composed of .900 fine gold with a 10% copper alloy. Modern Gold Libertads are available in more familiar sizes, such as 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, 1/10 oz, and 1/20 oz, in both uncirculated and proof finishes. These coins continue to uphold the high standards of quality and artistry that have long been associated with Mexican gold coinage.

The Iconic Mexican Gold Peso Coins

The Mexican Peso Gold Coins are among the oldest and most significant coins in the history of Mexican coinage. All Gold Pesos feature the Mexican Coat of Arms on the reverse, showing a golden eagle holding a snake while perched on a cactus, along with the words "Estados Unidos Mexicanos." The obverse design varies by denomination. The 2.5, 5, and 10 Pesos depict Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, leader of Mexico’s War of Independence, while the 50 Pesos, also known as the Gold Centenario, showcases the Winged Victory in front of Mexico's famous volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. These coins are highly regarded for both their historical value and beautiful craftsmanship.

The Mexican Gold Libertad Coin: A Modern Classic

First issued in 1981, the Mexican Gold Libertad is the official bullion coin of the Mexican government. Its design, until 2000, was inspired by the Gold Centenario, featuring the Winged Victory statue with Mexico’s two volcanoes in the background. The reverse side of the coin features the same Coat of Arms found on the Mexican Peso coins. The design was modernized in 2000, with a new depiction of Winged Victory for all weights, and a redesigned reverse for the 1 oz coin showing the Coat of Arms surrounded by 10 historical versions. Mexican Gold Libertads are available in five sizes, ranging from 1 oz to 1/20 oz, and are offered in both brilliant uncirculated and proof finishes.
