The American Silver Eagle Series

The American Silver Eagle is a cornerstone of the U.S. Mint’s silver bullion program, with its weight, purity, and content guaranteed by the United States Government. Authorized by Congress through the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, the first Silver Eagle coin was introduced in 1986. This iconic coin, struck in 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver, carries a denomination of $1 USD and has been a symbol of American craftsmanship ever since. Originally available in bullion and proof versions, the Burnished Silver Eagle was added to the series in 2006, providing collectors with a unique finish option. Although production was briefly halted in 2008, the Burnished Silver Eagles returned in 2011 and continue to be a highly sought-after edition within the series.

Design of the Burnished Silver Eagle

The Burnished Silver Eagle shares the classic design elements of its bullion and proof counterparts, featuring the revered "Walking Liberty" imagery created by Adolph A. Weinman. Lady Liberty is depicted in a full-length profile, striding confidently with her right hand outstretched and laurel and oak branches in her left. The American flag billows gracefully around her, with the sun rising in the background. This design, originally used on the Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947, is framed by the inscriptions “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and the year of mintage.

The reverse currently features the Type 2 design introduced in 2021, which marked a new chapter for the American Silver Eagle series. This new reverse, crafted by U.S. Mint Adolph A. Weinman, features a bold and realistic depiction of a bald eagle in flight, clutching an oak branch in its talons. This design replaced the original heraldic eagle by John Mercanti, symbolizing a modern interpretation of American strength and resilience. The Type 2 design also incorporates enhanced security features to combat counterfeiting, further increasing its appeal to collectors.

The Unique Appeal of Burnished Silver Eagles

What sets the Burnished American Silver Eagle apart is its satin-like finish, which gives the coin a distinct matte-like appearance. Unlike the proof and bullion versions, Burnished Silver Eagles are struck on specially polished blanks, known as planchets, creating a frosted, smooth finish that enhances the coin's visual appeal. The use of burnished blanks, rather than burnished dies, results in a coin that is both visually stunning and unique. The “W” mintmark, indicating its production at the West Point Mint, further distinguishes the Burnished Silver Eagle from its counterparts.

The Burnished Silver Eagle is produced in significantly lower quantities than its bullion and proof counterparts, making it a prized possession for collectors. Its limited mintage, combined with the sophisticated matte-like finish, makes the Burnished Silver Eagle a standout piece in any coin portfolio. At Bullion Exchanges, we celebrate the artistry and craftsmanship embodied in these coins, which continue to captivate collectors and investors alike with their unique combination of historical significance and modern innovation.
