About the Queen’s Beasts Gold Coins

The Royal Mint introduced in 2016 its latest sensational British gold coin series – the Queen’s Beasts Gold Coins – also available in 2 oz. silver version. The British Royal Mint, which has been an international bullion leader for over 1,000 years, produces these exceptional gold coins from .9999 pure gold in two size options: 1 oz. and ¼ oz. The Queen’s Beasts Gold series was inspired by the splendid coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth II, held in 1953 in Westminster Abbey. Ten majestic heraldic beast sculptures of six feet height, created by James Woodford RA, stood guard at Her Majesty’s ceremony. The Queen’s Beasts symbolize the different strands of royal ancestry which were inspired by Henry VIII’s King’s Beasts. The original sculptures of the Queen’s Beasts are preserved in Quebec, in the Canadian Museum of History. But, James Woodford also sculpted the beasts’ stone replicas which guard the Kew Gardens of United Kingdom. The Queen’s Beasts Gold Coins are also highly praised due to their unique design created by the exceptionally talented Royal Mint Coin designer – Jody Clark. He designed new representations of these impressive mythical creatures, lions, bull, falcon, griffin, yale, unicorn, greyhound, horse and dragon, for the stunning Queen’s Beasts Gold Coins. Jody researched the origins of heraldry and coats of arms which helped him create new, dynamic depictions, yet keeping the same sense of strength and courage.

The Design and Sizes of the Queen’s Beasts Gold Coins

The British Royal Mint produces the Queen’s Beasts Gold Coins in two weight options of ¼ oz. and 1 oz. made from .9999 pure gold. The obverse and reverse designs of these incredible coins are courtesy of the remarkable coin designer Jody Clark. The obverse side of the coins showcases the newest, fifth effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, encircled by the inscription “ELIZABETH II D.G. REG. F.D” which means “Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, Queen, and Defender of the Faith” and the coins’ face value of 25 GBP (1/4 oz.) or 100 GBP (1 oz.). The reverse side of the coins depicts one of the ten heraldic beasts. For the first Queen’s Beasts Gold Coin released in 2016, the reverse side displays a new image of the Lion of England. This magnificent creature is engraved in rampant position, with its raised forepaws, guarding the Britannic shield. Its image is surrounded by the purity and weight inscriptions, as well as the year of issue. The next Queen’s Beasts Gold Coins will depict on their reverse sides the following heraldic beasts: the Falcon of the Plantagenets, the Black Bull of Clarence, the Griffin of Edward III, the Yale of Beaufort, the White Lion of Mortimer, the White Greyhound of Richmond, the Unicorn of Scotland, the Red Dragon of Wales, and the White Horse of Hanover.
