History of Silver Britannia Coins

The success of the Gold Britannia coins, released in 1987, inspired the Royal Mint to produce the first silver version of this remarkable piece in 1997. The mint struck over 20,000 1 oz. Proof Silver Britannia coins, each having a face value of £2 (two pounds). The following edition,s issued between 1998 and 2012, were produced from .958 fine silver (in comparison with the standard British sterling, minted from .925 fine silver) with issues from 2013 on containing .999 pure silver. The Silver Britannia coin is among the most circulated silver coins in the world and is well-known to be the most famous silver coin in the British Isles and among all the Commonwealth nations.

Design of Silver Britannia Coins

The Britannia Silver coin has a unique and very attractive design and is among the most famous British Silver coins on the market. On the obverse side of the coin is depicted the profile image of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. What makes the obverse stand out is its use of the Third Portrait (an effigy portrait of the queen for the queen, updated every fifteen to twenty years, approximately) between 1985 and 1997, while the following coin issues used the Fourth Portrait, a more mature image of the queen. Beginning with the 2015 issues, the Britannia coin featured the latest portrait of Her Majesty, the Fifth Portrait, designed by Jody Clark. On the reverse of the coin is the figure of Standing Britannia, holding a trident in her right hand and a shield with the Union Jack blazon in her left while wearing a Corinthian helmet.

About Silver Britannia Coins

The Silver Britannia are outstanding pieces of British coinage, and the symbol of Britain’s power and influence. The image of Britannia has an important historical connotation, as “Britannia” was the name of the British Isles and its inhabitants given by the Roman soldiers over 2,000 years ago. Yet, over time, Britannia has gained a sort of goddess status, as well as the role of guardian of the British Isles. The Silver Britannia coins are issued in the sizes of 1, ½, ¼ and 1/10 oz., and sold individually, in sealed mint tubes of 25 coins, or in monster boxes of 500.
