About Perth Mint Lunar Series

Each year, one of the oldest mints in the world, the Australian Perth Mint, commemorates the Chinese Zodiac by issuing a new edition of its beautiful Lunar Series Coins in both silver and gold. Crafted from the finest silver, these remarkable collectibles are among the most popular Chinese Zodiac Coins. The first Lunar Series was introduced in 1999, with the “Year of the Rabbit” coin and continued through 2010 with the “Year of the Tiger” coin. Due to the series’ tremendous popularity, Perth Mint introduced the second Silver Lunar Coins series in 2008, with the “Year of the Mouse” coin, consequently overlapping the two series for two consecutive years. This cherished Lunar II silver coin program will end in 2019 with the release of the “Year of the Pig” silver coin.

Lunar Coins Design

The Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series features on the reverse the symbols of the 12-year Chinese calendar:

  • Pig
  • Dog
  • Rooster
  • Monkey
  • Goat
  • Horse
  • Snake
  • Dragon
  • Rabbit
  • Tiger
  • Ox
  • Mouse

Every reverse design was created by different artists, such as Natasha Muhl, who sketched the goat image, Tom Vaughan, who drew the horse, and Ing Ing Jong, who created the snake representation. According to the lunar calendar, each lunar symbol carries great influence over those born in that particular year. The lunar image is accompanied by the Chinese symbol for the character, the “P” mintmark, and the engraving: “Year of the Dog”.

On the obverse of the Lunar Silver Coins is the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley in 1998, along with the mintage year, the coin’s purity, weight, denomination, and the inscriptions: “Elizabeth II” and “Australia”.

About Perth Mint Lunar Series Silver

All silver coins minted in the Australian Lunar Series are produced from .999 fine silver in various weights: ½, 1, 2, 5, 10 troy ounces, and 1 kilo. However, these coins are struck with an issue limit and once the year is over, the mintage for the current lunar coins is closed, making them a rare addition and highly-praised collectible. Passionate collectors eagerly await the next release to add to their collection. These zodiac coins also make an excellent gift for friends and loved ones on special occasions like birthdays, weddings, graduations, or anniversaries.
