History of American Silver Eagles

The American Silver Eagle Coin, first released in 1986, is revered as one of the finest coins in U.S. coinage history. The coins’ original intent was to release an abundance of silver into coin circulation. Each year the supply and demand for the American Silver Eagles continue to increase, as the mint currently issues about 40 million one-dollar American Silver Eagles during each year of the series. The coin is issued from 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver and carries a $1 USD face value. The weight and purity of each Silver Eagle are guaranteed by the United States Government. Each US Silver Eagle is available in uncirculated, proof, and burnished finishes, as well as certified options. Proof American Silver Eagles are struck twice, making them lustrous and more finely detailed, while Burnished Silver Eagles are minted on specially matted finish blanks.

Design of Silver Eagles

Silver Eagles are famous for their beloved obverse and reverse imagery. On the obverse of the Silver American Eagle is depicted the design of "Walking Liberty", created by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. His design was originally used on half dollar coins manufactured between 1916 and 1947. It's considered as one of the most highly appreciated designs of American silver coins. The image showcases Lady Liberty confidently striding towards the rising sun with her body enveloped in the US flag’s folds while holding oak and laurel branches in her left arm. The "Walking Liberty" is framed by the inscriptions "Liberty", "In God We Trust", and the year of issue. On the reverse of the Silver Eagles is the symbol of freedom, patriotism, and pride - the impressive, heraldic eagle designed by John Mercanti, the Chief Engraver of the US Mint in 1986. The eagle has its wings outstretched, clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons and is surrounded by 13 stars, which represent the original 13 colonies, along with the inscriptions “United States of America” and the coin’s weight, purity, and denomination.

About American Silver Eagles

The American Silver Eagles are currently struck at the West Point facility, so the proof and burnished editions carry the “W” mintmark.  The mint also issues special editions produced at the San Francisco facility whose e pieces carry the “S” mintmark. Silver Eagles offered directly by the US Mint are sold in their original packaging. Certified Silver Eagles, which have already been submitted for grading and are authenticated by professional coin grading companies, such as NGC and PCGS, have higher premiums. Many investors and collectors choose American Eagle Silver bullion coins for diversifying their investment portfolio, IRA savings accounts, or just in order to collect a must-have coinage piece.
