The world-famous Queen's Beasts series was issued by the Royal Mint in 2016 with the first release of the “Lion of England” coin. This particular heraldic beast is the 6th release in the Queen’s Beasts program. This mythological creature symbolizes the Queen’s lineage to Henry VII and his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort. Lady Margaret is most renowned for her involvement in the War of the Roses, but is especially honored for her charitable history with higher education. Therefore, the mythical Yale beast is a mark of higher education, hence Yale University!

The obverse displays the profile portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II framed by the inscriptions of her name and the face value. Jody Clark’s striking design of the Yale is featured on the reverse of the coin with a shield. Inscriptions make note of the formal name, weight, purity, and the year of the issue.
