The Mexican Mint, officially known as Casa de Moneda de Mexico, is the oldest mint on the North American continent. Its most famous coin remains the Mexican Libertads, which are struck in both gold and silver. These coins are usually manufactured in a multitude of denominations, namely 1/20 troy oz, 1/10 ozt, 1/4 ozt, 1/2 ozt, 1 ozt, 2 ozt, 5 ozt, and 1 kilogram. Because of its high variability and master quality level, the Mexican Libertads are a wonderful addition to all portfolios. A certified piece such as this also carries a special numismatic value for being authenticated as one of the more superior strikes.
The obverse spotlights the Mexican Coat of Arms of Mexico in the center, surrounded by smaller renditions of the Coat of Arms through the years. In the center, a bald eagle perched atop a prickly pear cactus clutches a snake in its beak and talon. The image lies within a circular design: the bottom half consists of an olive and oak wreath and the words “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” sit at the top.
The reverse showcases "El Ángel" or the Angel of Independence statue in Mexico City. Victory, the Roman goddess, inspired this Angel’s likeness. She holds up a laurel wreath in her right hand, symbolizing victory. Her left hand holds a broken chain, which signifies the end of the Spanish dominion over Mexico. Behind the statue is the Mexican landscape, including its two most famous volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
