The Mexican Mint, officially called the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, has issued the Mexican Libertad silver coin annually since 1982. The lovely rendition of the Mexican icon of the Angel of Independence is what makes these coins so widely coveted. The Angel was inspired by the famed Winged Victory statue. Although this statue is based on the Greco-Roman image of Nike (also known as Victoria or Victory), Mexico adopted her image as a testament to their independence from Spain. Nowadays, you can find the statue of the Angel of Independence in Mexico City, erected in 1910. This statue is a memorial for the Mexican independence fighters as well as a reminder to uphold the virtue of freedom in Mexico. This international symbol of independence is honored on the Mexican Libertad silver coin. You can peruse our entire catalog of Silver and Gold Libertads, both of which come in multiple sizes.

The obverse of the Mexican Libertad silver coin showcases the modern Mexican Coat of Arms in the center of a wheel of previous Coat of Arms renditions. A golden eagle stands atop a prickly pear cactus, clutching a snake between its beak and talon. The image is seated within a circular border. The top half says "Estados Unidos Mexicanos," and an olive and oak wreath outlines the other half.

The reverse touts an image of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, which was erected in 1910 to honor the centennial of the Mexican War of Independence. Inspired by Nike, the Angel bears a laurel wreath in one hand to symbolize victory. A broken 3-link chain is held in her other hand to depict the three centuries of Spanish rule, which has now come to an end. The background features the Mexican landscape with its two most famous volcanoes: Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
