About Mexican Silver Libertad Coins

The Mexican Silver Libertad is a remarkable piece of the Mexican silver coin selection. La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, also called the Mexican Mint, first released the Mexican Libertad Silver coin in 1982. It quickly became very popular amongst investors and collectors thanks to its historical design. Due to increasing demand, the Mexican Mint decided to expand the production of the Silver Libertad, and in 1991 started offering sizes other than 1 oz., like the 1/20, 1/10, ¼, and ½ ounce options. In 1996, the oldest American mint also began striking 2 and 5 oz. Mexican Libertads. Every size has the same .999 silver purity and carries the same design and is produced in both uncirculated and proof versions. Their unique features, along with their limited issue, make them an extremely rare and valuable collectible.

Design of Mexican Silver Libertads

The obverse of this silver coin features the Winged Victory in front of two volcanoes: Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. These volcanoes are important symbols in Mexican mythology because they represent a legendary love story between a warrior and an ancient princess that were separated by death. The Winged Victory image is also a reference to the Roman goddess of Victory, who inspired generals returning triumphant from wars and has acted as the symbol of the Mexican War of Independence since 1910. However, in 1996, the mint decided to slightly change her depiction: now her arms are outstretched and she is shown standing in front of a more expansive view of Mexico City’s valley.

The reverse side of the Mexican Libertad features the Mexican Coat of Arms,  a golden eagle perched on a pear cactus and holding a snake in its beak. This depiction has a strong religious connotation, for the Tenochtitlan people because it symbolizes the triumph of good over the evil. Recent versions of the Mexican Silver Libertad also feature an additional 10 historical coat of arms surround Mexico’s official coat of arms.
