The Mexican Silver Libertads are struck by La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, commonly referred to as the Mexican Mint. This is the oldest mint on the North American continent, and it initially opened in 1535. But the Mexican Libertad silver coin was not for sale until its debut in 1982. The coins feature the Angel of Independence on them, a statue that was inspired by the Greco-Roman rendition of Nike or Victoria, the Goddess of Victory. This statue is stationed in Mexico City today, erected in the year marking the centennial since the start of the Mexican War for Independence. This statue is a memorial for those who fought for liberation. Now, it remains a reminder for the country to uphold freedom throughout the nation, and it is the location of many protests both big and small. Take a look at the Mexican Libertad silver coins (and Gold Libertads) for sale in our catalog today.
The obverse showcases the modern Mexican Coat of Arms encircled by the different national coats of arms used throughout Mexican history. The centered image spotlights an eagle perched atop a cactus, holding a snake in its beak and talon. This image sits inside a circular design.
