The Mexican Mint, formally referred to as the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, routinely strikes the Mexican Libertad silver coin annually, ever since 1982. These coins have become internationally celebrated for the stunning depiction of the Mexican icon of the Angel of Independence. This design inspired by the world-renowned Winged Victory statue. This statue was inspired by the Greco-Roman rendition of Nike (also known as Victoria or Victory), Mexico adapted her image after the nation began to fight for independence from Spain in 1810. Today, the Angel of Independence has stood in Mexico City since 1910 memorializing those who fought for Mexican independence and inspiring the continuance of freedom in the country. The high-quality finish and annual release make the Mexican Libertad silver coin a classic numismatic piece. The obverse of the Mexican Libertad silver coin showcases the Mexican Coat of Arms. A golden eagle stands atop a prickly pear cactus, clutching a snake between its beak and talon. The image is seated within a circular border. The top half says "Estados Unidos Mexicanos," and an olive and oak wreath outlines the other half.
The reverse touts an image of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, which was erected in 1910 to honor the centennial of the Mexican War of Independence. Inspired by Nike, the Angel bears a laurel wreath in one hand to symbolize victory. A broken 3-link chain is held in her other hand to depict the three centuries of Spanish rule, broken as of 1821. The background features the Mexican landscape with its two most famous volcanoes: Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
