The Mexican Mint, officially called the Casa de Moneda de Mexico, releases the Mexican Libertad silver coin every year since 1982. The lovely rendition of the Mexican icon of the Angel of Independence is what makes these coins so recognized across the globe. The Angel was inspired by the famed Winged Victory statue. Although this statue’s likeness is based on the Greco-Roman image of Nike (also known as Victoria or Victory), Mexico adopted her likeness to honor their independence from Spain in 1821. You can find the statue of the Angel of Independence in Mexico City today. It was erected in 1910 as a memorial for the Mexican independence fighters. It additionally serves as a reminder to uphold the virtue of freedom in Mexico. This international symbol of independence is honored on the Mexican Libertad silver coin. You can easily see how its high-quality finish and illustration secure its position as a distinguished numismatic piece. Feel free to browse our complete selection of Silver and Gold Libertads, which come in a wide variety of sizes.
The obverse of the Mexican Libertad silver coin showcases the Mexican Coat of Arms. A golden eagle stands atop a prickly pear cactus, clutching a snake between its beak and talon. The image is seated within a circular border. The top half says "Estados Unidos Mexicanos," and an olive and oak wreath outlines the other half.
The reverse touts an image of the "El Ángel" or Angel of Independence, which was erected in 1910 to honor the centennial of the Mexican War of Independence. Inspired by Nike, the Angel bears a laurel wreath in one hand to symbolize victory. A broken 3-link chain is held in her other hand to depict the three centuries of Spanish rule, now broken. The background features the Mexican landscape with its two most famous volcanoes: Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
