Different Coats of Arms, used throughout Mexico's history, surround the central image.
The reverse features the image of the "El Ángel" (Angel of Independence), a statue built-in 1910 to celebrate the beginning of Mexico's War of Independence. Victory, the Roman goddess, holds a laurel wreath in her outstretched right hand, signifying victory. In her left hand, she holds a broken chain, depicting freedom. A backdrop of the Mexican landscape features its two most famous volcanoes, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
