Influenced by the popularity of the 50 State Quarters Program released in 1999, the US Mint’s America the Beautiful 5 oz coin series features 56 coins from the 50 states, D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and Puerto Rico. Initiated in 2010, the America the Beautiful program honors breathtaking U.S. national forests, parks, and historical monuments. Now offered by Bullion Exchanges, the new 2020 5 oz Silver America the Beautiful ATB VI Salt River Bay National Historical Park Coin is among the five new ATB releases for 2020. The other states/territories in this year’s batch include American Samoa, Connecticut, Vermont, and Kansas. This 5 troy oz coin contains .999 fine silver and holds a face value of 25 cents. 

The Virgin Islands, an official U.S. territory, is comprised of a group of islands and islets located in the Caribbean. One of those islands, St. Coix, is home to the Salt River Bay National Historic Park and Ecological Preserve established by Congress in 1992. This park serves to protect and assist threatened and endangered species by preserving the watersheds, mangrove forests, and marine environments these species inhabit. The design on this Virgin Islands coin depicts a Red Mangrove Tree, one of the threatened species protected by the Salt River Bay Preserve. Because its roots are continuously growing, some refer to the Red Mangrove as a “Walking Tree”, as it appears the tree is occasionally walking on water. These trees provide an essential service to their surrounding ecosystem. They give habitat to crustaceans, fish, birds, mammals, and reptiles. Additionally, they help form large coastal forests throughout the tropics.
