Pursuing the major success of the 50 State Quarters Program released in 1999, the US Mint began issuing the “America the Beautiful” 5 oz Coin Series in 2010. This coin program will feature a total of 56 coins from the 50 US states, D.C., U.S. Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Guam, and Puerto Rico. This ATB coin series commemorates U.S. national forests, parks, and historical events. The other states/territories produced for this year’s batch include American Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Connecticut, and Vermont. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Kansas serves to protect a significant part of the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. Less than 4% of the original 400,000 square miles of Tallgrass Prairie remains, mostly located in Flint Hills, Kansas. Many species of animals call this National Preserve their home, and in 2009 a bison herd was introduced to the area, growing in number every year. Many types of butterflies, like the Monarch and the regal fritillary, also call this ecosystem their home.

The coin’s obverse displays the familiar image of George Washington’s bust, facing left.

The reverse depicts a Regal Fritillary butterfly fluttering amongst the Indian grass and Big Bluestem grass.
