American Samoa is the only U.S. Territory located south of the equator. It is comprised of five volcanic islands and two coral atolls. The Samoa National Park covers 2,600 miles of tropical rain forest in the three remote volcanic islands of Tutuila, Ta’u, and Ofu. Known for its conservation efforts, the Samoa National Park preserves the only mixed-species paleotropical rainforest in the United States, as well as the threatened habitat of native fruit bats. The US Mint decided to feature the Samoan Fruit Bat on the coin’s reverse to raise awareness of their perilous status due to the loss of their habitat and commercial hunting.

The reverse design depicts a mother Samoan fruit bat hanging upside down, holding her young her tiny pup in a heartfelt embrace. Both bats stare straight ahead at the viewer as if imploring us to help them.

The obverse of the coin features a familiar design seen on the US quarter for over 80 years. George Washington’s bust faces left, surrounded by inscriptions.
