The Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park gained its name from four notable people who participated in either its conservation or dedication. George Perkins Marsh, known as one of America’s first environmentalists, grew up in this area in the early 1800s. In the late 1800s, lawyer and financier Frederick Billings purchased Marsh’s home and reforested much of the surrounding area with many native tree species. Across the street from the park, the Billings Farm & Museum serves the community as a working dairy farm and museum. In 1992, Laurance and Mary Rockefeller donated the land and house to the National Park Service, thus establishing what is now known as the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. Today, it is the only national park dedicated to land stewardship and conservation. Located in Woodstock, Vermont, visitors can take advantage of guided tours of the house, and enjoy lovely walks through the gardens and trails.
The obverse features the familiar design of George Washington’s bust, seen on Silver Quarters for over 80 years.
The reverse design depicts a young girl planting a Norway Spruce seedling- one of the tree species Frederick Billings had planted in the area during his conservation efforts. The child planting a tree symbolizes a hopeful vision for conservation efforts and a sustainable future.
