The Morgan Silver Dollar series was introduced in 1878 following the passage of the Bland–Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase large amounts of silver and strike it into silver dollars. The Carson City Mint operated from 1870 to 1893 and produced coins in relatively limited quantities compared to other mints.
