1878 Silver Morgan Dollar 7 Tailfeathers Reverse of 78 VG-XF

The 1878 Silver Morgan Dollar 7 Tailfeathers Reverse of 78 VG-XF is a classic first-year example of one of America’s most iconic silver dollars. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint, this coin contains 0.7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver and is offered in Very Good to Extremely Fine condition, showing honest circulation wear with clear, identifiable details.

The 1878 7-Tailfeather Morgan dollar comes in two main varieties. The first has an eagle with a flat breast and a parallel top arrow feather, known as the Reverse of 1878. This is by far the most common variety of 1878 Morgan dollar. These early coins were produced in large quantities as the United States resumed large-scale silver dollar minting after the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, making them an important starting point for many Morgan Dollar collections.

Coin Features:

  • Contains .7734 troy oz of .900 fine silver
  • Very Good to Extra Fine condition
  • Struck by the US Mint
  • Face value of $1 USD backed by the US government
  • Individual coins come in protective plastic coin flips
  • Obverse: Shows the George T Morgan illustration of a left-facing portrait of Lady Liberty with her Liberty Cap. Her cap is decorated with two heads of wheat and two cotton blossoms. Thirteen stars appear on the border to represent the original colonies. Inscriptions: “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and the year of mintage flank the main device on the top and bottom.
  • Reverse: Features a majestic bald eagle with outstretched wings. The eagle clutches an olive branch and arrows in its talons to symbolize peace and preparedness. Inscriptions: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.”
