The History of the Morgan Silver Dollar

The original Morgan Silver Dollar series, minted from 1878 to 1904 and briefly in 1921, holds a special place in American coinage history. Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, this iconic coin was introduced following the discovery of the Comstock Lode, a major silver deposit in Nevada. The U.S. government responded to the influx of silver by passing the Bland-Allison Act, which mandated large-scale silver purchases for coinage. As a result, millions of Morgan Dollars were minted, far surpassing the needs of regular circulation. These coins remained largely stored in U.S. Treasury vaults until they were gradually released to the public in the mid-20th century.

The Iconic Design of the Morgan Dollar

The design of the Morgan Dollar is celebrated for its unique portrayal of Lady Liberty on the obverse. Unlike the classical, Grecian-inspired Lady Liberty seen on earlier U.S. coinage, Morgan’s depiction was modeled after Philadelphia school teacher Anna Williams, giving her a more modern and distinctly American look. Lady Liberty is framed by 13 stars, the issue date, and the motto "E Pluribus Unum." The reverse of the coin features a bald eagle, perched with wings outstretched, holding arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Morgan's attention to detail, such as the absence of a traditional breastplate on the eagle, gave the silver dollar design a fresh and naturalistic quality that set it apart from other coins of its era.

Rarity and Collectibility of Morgan Silver Dollars

Morgan Silver Dollars were produced in five different branches of the U.S. Mint: Philadelphia (no mint mark), New Orleans (O), San Francisco (S), Carson City (CC), and Denver (D). Coins from certain mints, particularly Carson City, are rarer and highly sought after by collectors today. Each Morgan Dollar is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, giving it a weight of 26.73 grams. Over a century after its creation, the Morgan Dollar remains a beloved piece of American numismatic history, prized for its beauty, rich heritage, and historical significance.
