About Mexican Silver Libertad Coins

The Mexican Silver Libertad is an iconic silver coin and a standout within the Mexican Mint's offerings. First introduced by La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the Mexican Mint, in 1982, the Silver Libertad quickly gained popularity among investors and collectors for its historical significance and beautiful design. In response to its growing demand, the Mexican Mint expanded its range in 1991, offering fractional sizes including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/2 oz coins. By 1996, the Mint began producing larger sizes, such as 2 oz and 5 oz Libertads, with the addition of a 1 Kilo version in 2008, allowing for even more variety. All sizes are struck from .999 fine silver and are available in both uncirculated and proof versions, making them a valuable addition to any collection due to their limited mintages and unique features.

Design of Mexican Silver Libertads

The reverse of the Mexican Silver Libertad coin showcases the powerful figure of Winged Victory, a symbol of Mexican independence, standing against the backdrop of two famous volcanoes, Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. These volcanoes have deep roots in Mexican mythology, symbolizing the tragic love story between a warrior and a princess separated by death. The Winged Victory itself is inspired by the Roman goddess of Victory, a figure known to symbolize triumph. The design was updated in 1996, offering a more expansive view of the Valley of Mexico, with Winged Victory now standing with outstretched arms, representing freedom and resilience.

A Celebration of Mexican Heritage

The obverse of the Mexican Silver Libertad features Mexico’s official Coat of Arms, showcasing a golden eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus with a snake in its beak. This image has strong cultural and religious significance, representing the triumph of good over evil, a central theme in Aztec mythology. More recent versions of the Silver Libertad also include an additional 10 historical coats of arms that encircle Mexico's national emblem, reflecting the rich history and heritage of the country.
