History of British Silver Lunar Coins

Among the most cherished  British Silver coins, the Silver Lunar coins are a wonderful fusion of Chinese tradition and British glory. This first-ever Silver Lunar coin, produced by the Royal Mint, was released in 2014 with the Year of the Horse depiction, followed by the Year of the Goat in 2015, the Year of the Monkey in 2016, and the Year of the Rooster in 2017. Over the course of the next several years, the coins will feature the following zodiac animal symbols: the dog, the pig, the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon and the snake.

Design of British Silver Lunar Coins

Each animal depiction of the Royal Mint Lunar coins was designed by the Chinese-British printmaker Wuon-Gean Ho. She is an artist, animator, and book illustrator of Chinese descent who was born in the United Kingdom. For the 2018 design of the Year of the Dog, she created an engaging image of a bouncing terrier, playful and full of life, with a background resembling the imprint of the dog’s nose. The dog, according to the Chinese Zodiac, symbolizes loyal, friendship, and faithfulness. Besides the Wuon-Gean Ho design, each British Lunar Silver coin’s reverse features the inscription of the weight, year of issue, and .999 silver purity. The obverse of the coin showcases the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
