About Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint produces Canadian currency coins, blanks, collectible and commemorative coins, as well as bars, from gold, silver, platinum and palladium. The mint also manufactures coins for other countries and governments around the world, like China, New Zealand, Jamaica and Papua New Guinea. The Royal Canadian Mint is well-known for its high-quality, impressive designs and innovative techniques. The mint initially refined its  gold through use of  electrolysis, and later went on to adopt the chlorination method, and today is using a combination of these two techniques. The RCM continues to introduce new and innovative practices in refining, such as locating silver in gold prior to it being refined. The highly reputable mint is also  famous for using the multi-ply plating technique and for its unique releases, like the first colored coin in 2004, which depicted a red puppy in the middle of the maple leaf.

The History of the Royal Canadian Mint

Long before the Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908, Canadian currency coins were struck by the Royal Mint of England in London and Birmingham. Only after almost 50 years, did Canada decide to form its own national mint in, authorization of the plans commenced in 1901. Seven years later the Mint gleefully opened their first facility in Ottawa. Despite being an independently run facility, the mint remained a subsidiary of the Canadian Department of Finance.

In 1969, when the Canadian government was reorganized, the mint was turned into a Crown Corporation. Six years after, the RCM Mint opened its second facility in Winnipeg, mostly used for producing circulating coinage. In 1979, the Ottawa facility became an official National Historic Site.
