The obverse of the coin displays the young portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen wears her royal diadem, and the portrait extends down to her shoulder. She is bordered by two inscriptions on either side. One engraving is her name, and the other is the Latin phrase for “Queen by the Grace of God.”

The reverse bears the National Coat of Arms of Canada, which incorporates the Canadian motto in Latin: “A MARI USQUE AD MARE.” This translates to “From sea to sea.” The coat of arms incorporates symbols from the four founding nations of Canada from the animals on the shield to the flags, floral emblems, and the crown at the top. These symbols represent England, Scotland, Ireland, and France, the four founding nations of Canada.
