About the South African Mint

Established in 1890 by President Paul Kruger, the South African Mint officially opened on July 6th, 1892. Due to the severed ties between South Africa and Britain in 1941, the mint officially closed. The Mint reopened in 1961 when South Africa became its own Republic. This year saw the creation of a new South African monetary system designed to replace British currency, coin by coin. Nowadays, the South African Mint, currently located in Centurion, mints coins for South Africa as well as numerous other countries.
