PEZ’s Exciting Evolution

In 1927, Austrian inventor Eduard Haas III sought out a possible alternative to smoking. Consequently, his efforts resulted in the refreshing and popular PEZ candy. Originating from the German word for peppermint, “pfefferminz”, the word “PEZ” was created when Haas took the first, middle, and last letters of the word and combined them. After reaching American shelves in 1952 with resounding success, the candy company physically established itself on American soil by building a factory in Connecticut in 1973. Interestingly, the famous PEZ shape was originally round and called ‘PEZ Drops,’ but was quickly changed to its brick shape we know and love today. In 1957, PEZ released the first traditional head dispenser: the “Halloween Witch”. Subsequently, in 1958, Popeye took the spotlight as the first licensed character featured on a dispenser. Today, many collectors pride themselves on their populous PEZ portfolios.
