In 1927, Austrian inventor Eduard Haas III was seeking a possible alternative to smoking. His efforts resulted in the refreshing and popular PEZ candy. Originating from the German word for peppermint, “pfefferminz”, the word “PEZ” was created when Haas took the first, middle, and last letters of the word and combined them. After reaching American shelves in 1952 with resounding success, the candy company physically established itself on American soil by building a factory in Connecticut in 1973. Interestingly, the famous PEZ shape was originally round and called ‘PEZ Drops,’ but was quickly changed to its brick shape we know and love today. In 1957, the “Halloween Witch” was the first traditional head dispenser to be released. Soon after, in 1958, Popeye was the first licensed character to be featured on a dispenser.
