On ancient battlefields, in the midst of chaos and carnage, the British Monarch proudly displayed their Royal Arms on banners, shields, and armor. The Royal Arms symbolize absolute authority and great power, and it has undergone various changes throughout the years as different monarchs took the throne. The royal coat of arms displayed on this coin first appeared on currency as early as the 14th century and is currently used by Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II.

The coin’s obverse showcases the regal profile of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by artist Jody Clark. Queen Elizabeth’s bust faces right and is adorned with her royal crown and elegant jewels.

Designed by Timothy Noad in 2019, the coin’s reverse features the royal coat of arms. A lion and unicorn leap out from behind a shield. This shield bears the crest of the nations of the United Kingdom. The three lions in the corners represent England, the rampant lion represents Scotland, and the melodious harp represents Ireland. ‘DIEU ET MON DROIT’ (‘God and my right’) is etched on a ribbon underneath the lion and unicorn while ‘HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE’ (‘shame upon him who thinks evil upon it’) is inscribed on the shield. The background shows off a lovely radial line texture.
