The royal coat of arms dates back to battlefields of ancient times, where the British Monarch displayed their Royal Arms on banners, shields, and armor. Representing authority and power, the coat of arms has undergone various changes and adjustments throughout the years as different monarchs took the throne. The royal coat of arms currently used by Queen Elizabeth II is displayed on this coin and first appeared on currency as early as the 14th century. 

The coin’s obverse features the regal profile of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. Her bust looks to the right and is adorned with her royal crown and elegant jewels.

The coin’s reverse, designed by Timothy Noad in 2019, showcases the royal coat of arms. A lion and unicorn seem to leap out from behind a shield. This shield bears the crest of the nations of the United Kingdom. The three lions in the corners represent England, the rampant lion represents Scotland, and the melodious harp represents Ireland. ‘DIEU ET MON DROIT’ (‘God and my right’) is etched on a ribbon underneath the lion and unicorn while ‘HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE’ (‘shame upon him who thinks evil upon it’) is inscribed on the shield. The background shows off a lovely radial line texture.
