Beginning in 1986, the Perth Mint Kangaroo series was originally the Gold Nugget coin. Gold nuggets honored the famous Australian gold nuggets, but the Perth Mint redesigned the series for 1990 to showcase a more recognizable Australian icon: the red kangaroo. The first release of this modern series was the Gold Kangaroo coin in 1990, then the Silver Kangaroo coin in 1993. The first BU Silver Kangaroo was released in 2016. The Platinum Perth Mint Kangaroo coin is the newest edition of the Kangaroo coin program. It was first introduced and released in 2018. The Kangaroo collection is among the most beloved Perth Mint coins, but not the only one to feature Australian wildlife. The obverse bears the royal Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty wears her famous crown with matching royal earrings and necklace. The rim is inscribed with her name, “AUSTRALIA”, and the denomination of 100 dollars.
The reverse for the 2021 Platinum Kangaroo coin displays the classic image of the Red Kangaroo mid-hop. Rays of sunshine emanate from the center of the coin’s background. Inscriptions indicate the name of the coin, year of issue, weight, and purity around the rim.
