The Australian Gold Kangaroo coins are available in 5 sizes and they are 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz and 1 kg bullion coins. The coins have a two-toned frosted design effect. These were the first bullion coins to have a change in reverse design each year. Gold Corporation is a sovereign institution owned by the Government of Western Australia. The Gold Corporation has two main subsidiaries; the GoldCorp Australia and Western Australian Mint that also includes the Perth Mint. While the Perth Mint is responsible for minting all the precious metal bullion coins of Australia, it is the duty of the GoldCorp Australia to manage the international sales and marketing of these bullions.

Located in the Heart of Perth, the capital of Western Australia, the Perth Mint has been minting coins since its genesis in 1899. The Australian Gold Kangaroo were first minted by the Perth Mint in 1986 and launched to the general public in 1987, but at that time, they were known as the Australian Gold Nuggets as the reverse featured the actual famous gold nuggets of different shapes and forms found in Australia.

The Australian nuggets apart from the 1 oz size also came in fractional sizes of 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz and all the four size of the coins were launched formally by the Prime Minister of Australia, R.J. Hawke in Sydney on April 23, 1987. From 1987-1989, the Australian nugget featured images of various images of actual gold nuggets found in Australia on the reverse. In 1990, the design was changed to portray a Kangaroo, which was a more recognizable symbol of Australia. The theme and subject of the design is centered around the Kangaroo, however each year the reverse features different designs.

The obverse features the right facing bust portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, a design by Ian Rank-Broadley. The Australian Gold Kangaroo comes in 5 different sizes; the 1 kg which is called the larger bullion coin and the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes which are called as the standard bullion coins. They have a face value of $3,000, $100, $50, $25, and $15 respectively.

These are legal tender backed by the Western Australian Government and issued under the Australian Currency Act of 1965. The Australian Kangaroo gold coins have a special frosted finish since 1987. The proof and bullion coins can be distinguished by the frosting in their design. In the proof coins, the main design is frosted and in the bullion coins it is reverse frosted, where the background is frosted and the design is shiny.

The Australian Gold Kangaroos are an investor’s dream come true with their 24 karat gold and sold at low premiums. It is also a collector’s dream come true as these coins have low mintage and have a new reverse design each year.

Customer Reviews

Great (Review by Maxwell)
I elected to order 4 of the random year. I got 1 2009 dated coin. That might be my favorite design of the series so far! And the other 3 coins were dated 1987 with a picture of the gold nugget on the back. Very pleased as they changed the design from the nugget to kangaroo and no longer are making the nugget. Great addition to my portfolio and shows the development of the series.
