The Australian Gold Nuggets and Kangaroos were minted as Australian Gold Nuggets in the beginning. The Nuggets were first minted in 1986 and was officially launched in four sizes of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz for the general public by the Australian Prime Minister R.J. Hawke in Sydney on April 23, 1987.
The reverse of the coins from 1986-1989 featured actual famous gold nuggets found in Australia and the design of the nugget changed each year. However, outside Australia, these nugget designs were difficult to recognize as it was limited to Australia. Since Kangaroo is a national symbol of Australia and is a more relatable and recognizable option internationally, it was decided that the nugget designs will be taken over by the Kangaroo designs. Hence since the 1990s till the present time, the Australian Nugget Gold coins sports an annually changing kangaroo design on the reverse. Australian Kangaroo gold coins are the only other gold bullion with an annually changing reverse design, the other one being the Chinese Gold Panda.
