1/2 oz Australian Kangaroo/Nugget Gold Coin .9999 Fine Proof/BU (Random Year)

The Australian Kangaroo/Gold Nugget gold coins were first minted in 1986 by the renowned Perth Mint and launched for the general public in 1987. They come in 5 different sizes of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, and 1 kg sizes with face values of $100, $50, $25, $15, and $3,000 respectively. These are legal tender bullion coins backed by the Western Australian Government. These Australian gold nugget coins are made from 24-karat pure gold and have limited mintages. Each year the design on the reverse changes, always centering, however, on either the Kangaroo or a gold nugget.

  • Reverse: The subject of design is Kangaroo, but design varies each year. The 1986-1989 coin reverse features gold nugget designs.

The Australian Gold Nuggets and Kangaroos were minted as Australian Gold Nuggets in the beginning. The Nuggets were first minted in 1986 and was officially launched in four sizes of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz for the general public by the Australian Prime Minister R.J. Hawke in Sydney on April 23, 1987.

The reverse of the coins from 1986-1989 featured actual famous gold nuggets found in Australia and the design of the nugget changed each year. However, outside Australia, these nugget designs were difficult to recognize as it was limited to Australia. Since Kangaroo is a national symbol of Australia and is a more relatable and recognizable option internationally, it was decided that the nugget designs will be taken over by the Kangaroo designs. Hence since the 1990s till the present time, the Australian Nugget Gold coins sports an annually changing kangaroo design on the reverse. Australian Kangaroo gold coins are the only other gold bullion with an annually changing reverse design, the other one being the Chinese Gold Panda.
