The koala is an herbivore distinctly native to Australia. Although often referred to as a “koala bear”, koalas are not bears at all, they are marsupials. Koalas climb trees and have a pouch to carry their offspring, similar to kangaroos. Every day, koalas eat eucalyptus leaves, and because they are normally toxic, their bodies consume a large amount of energy to process it. This is why koalas often sleep throughout the day and may only be awake for two hours total!
