From 2016 forward, the People’s Bank of China began measuring the gold panda series in grams instead of ounces, with available weights of one, three, eight, fifteen, and 30 grams. These coins also arrive in silver, and the proof editions are struck in additional sizes such as 30 grams, 150 grams, and 1 kilo. Annually, the Chinese gold panda coins get a makeover with a brand new panda image on its reverse, much like the Gold Kangaroo series from the Perth Mint. 

The reverse for this year’s coin displays a panda cub snacking on bamboo. It is grasping a few leaves in its left paw and reaching for more with its right. A bamboo tree hangs over the panda cub, keeping it happy and fed. The coin’s denomination is inscribed below the hanging leaves while the purity and weight are inscribed along the rim.

The obverse features the Temple of Heaven, an imperial complex of religious buildings found in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The year of mintage is inscribed along the rim, alongside the Chinese characters for “People’s Republic of China.”
