This Azure Dragon coin highlights a key figure central to Asian cultures. This dragon is one of the mythological Four Guardians which includes the Azure Dragon of the East, Vermillion Bird of the South, White Tiger of the West, and Black Turtle of the North. Each of these beasts was chosen based on interpretations of the constellations. Furthermore, these Guardians’ colors were identified based on the soil found in China in each cardinal direction. The Azure Dragon represents not only the blue-grey soil of the watery East but also the season of spring and the element of wood. She is placed in a striking yin-and-yang octagon over a background with a traditional Chinese constellation map. The border of the design has traditional kanji marking the map.

The reverse of the bi-metallic coin displays an impressive illustration of the mythological Azure Dragon. On the right side of the coin is gilded Chinese kanji.
