The Morgan Dollar, first minted in 1878, was introduced following the discovery of the Comstock Lode in Nevada, symbolizing the expansion of the American West. The massive silver find led to a surplus, prompting the Coinage Act of 1873 to regulate silver’s use in coinage and stabilize the economy. Although millions of Morgan Dollars were melted down during World War I under the Pittman Act to aid Great Britain, the act required their eventual replacement. This paved the way for the Peace Dollar in 1921, marking the end of the Morgan Dollar era.

Only three-quarters of a million Morgans were struck with the 8TF design before the change was made, making this a rare and popular type for the Morgan dollar series.
