Morgan Dollars were first minted in 1878 after the passing of the Bland-Allison Act. They were minted till 1904 and then stopped but picked up again in 1921. Millions of these coins were minted and also melted due to the Pittman Act. Since these coins were minted more than needed for circulation, most of these coins were stored in the Treasury vaults, which the Treasury started issuing in exchange for silver certificates till the early 1960's.
Made of 90% silver and 10% alloy, these Morgan Silver Dollars are a favorite among collectors as well as investors. The coins in Very Good condition are sought after by collectors for their Morgan Dollar sets. While there are many factors that collectors look into like the condition, dates, mint marks, design, and much more, investors purchase them for the intrinsic value of these coins.
The Morgan Dollars get their name because of their designer George T. Morgan, an engraver from England. This coin is also famous for being a new fresh idea in its design, till that time, the US coinage saw Liberty designs based on neoclassical Greek images. However, Morgan wanted to depict an American face as Lady Liberty, and therefore used an American girl, Anna Willess Williams, a Philadelphia school teacher as a model. This is one of the most famous design in American coinage.
