Hercules is one of the most recognizable characters in Greek mythology. This demi-god’s deeds have been widely represented in art and literature throughout the centuries. This silver round series commemorates the 12 labors that Hercules had to perform as a part of his sentence for slaying his family, after being driven mad by the goddess Hera. For his crime, he was ordered by the Oracle to serve King Eurytheus and complete his 10 labors. Two more labors were added later because the King felt two of the original missions were not completed properly. For the third labor, Hercules was ordered to bring the Hind (or Stag) of Ceryneia to King Eurystheus. This stag, sacred to the goddess Artemis, was believed to be faster than a speeding arrow and have large antlers of pure gold. After capturing the elusive stag, Hercules promised Artemis he would let her precious animal go free after he brought it back to Eurystheus. He honored that promise, much to the anger of the King, who had planned to add the stag to his personal menagerie. 

The obverse of the round displays a profile view of the hero Hercules, wearing the skin of the Neman Lion, which he killed during his first labor. He holds the end of the club used to initially subdue the beast. Inscriptions include the weight and purity of the round.

The Golden Hind of Artemis is depicted on the reverse of the round, majestically leaping through the forest. Inscriptions include "THE CERYNEIAN HIND", as well as the Roman numeral for ‘3’.
