Mintage of Only - 6,701
The Stymphalian Birds 1 oz Silver rounds is the sixth design in the 12 Labors of Hercules series. This round is composed of one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.
The Stymphalian Birds are man-eating birds with bronze beaks and sharp metallic feathers, they were pets of Ares, the god of war. The Stymphalian birds were defeated by the Hercules in his sixth labor for King Eurystheus. Hercules could not go into the marsh to reach the nests of the birds, as the ground would not support his weight. Athena, noticing the hero's plight, gave Hercules a rattle which Hephaestus made especially for the occasion. Hercules shook the rattle and frightened the birds into the air. Hercules then shot many of them with arrows tipped with poisonous blood from the slain Hydra. Hercules brought some of the slain birds to Eurystheus as proof of his success.
The reverse side of this round features two Stymphalian Birds perched o skulls and bones, with another flying above the roman numeral six (VI) which represents the sixth labor. The reverse side also features the inscriptions “STYMPHALIAN BIRDS” and “VI”. The obverse side design remains the same as the previous five rounds released, featuring a left-facing profile of Hercules wearing the Nemean Lion's hide as armor on his head and club in his hand. Inscribed on the obverse side is Fine Silver, 1 oz and CMXCIX , which is the Roman numeral for "999".
