Hercules was fathered by the god Zeus and born to a mortal woman named Alcmene, making him a demi-god. As one of the most recognizable heroes in Greek mythology, his adventures have been memorialized in art and literature over thousands of years. This Hercules silver round series commemorates the 12 labors that Hercules performed as his penance for killing his family, caused by a bought of madness inflicted by the goddess Hera. For his terrible crime, he was ordered by the Delphic oracle to serve King Eurytheus and complete his 10 labors. Two additional labors were ordered after because Eurytheus decided two of the original labors were not completed properly. For the seventh labor, Hercules was instructed to capture the bull that was troubling Minos, the king of Crete. This Cretan Bull was destroying all the crops in the region and causing trouble for Minos’s kingdom in general. Hercules was so strong he was able to capture the animal with his bare hands and bring it back to Eurystheus. Upon laying eyes on the imposing bull, King Eurystheus was so afraid he jumped inside a giant jar to hide. Eurystheus ended up setting the bull free, where it escaped to Marathon, thereby acquiring the name Marathonian Bull.
The obverse of the round displays a profile view of Hercules, wearing the skin of the Nemean Lion, whom he killed for his very first labor. Inscriptions include the weight and purity of the round.
The Cretan Bull is displayed on the reverse of the round, proudly trotting forward. Inscriptions include "CRETAN BULL", as well as the Roman numeral for 7.
