Zeus, the Greek god of the sky, lightning, and thunder conceived a child with a mortal woman named Alcmene, who named their son Hercules. Hercules then grew up to become one of the most famous heroes in Greek mythology. This demi-god’s extraordinary adventures have been immortalized in various forms of art throughout history. After being driven mad by the goddess Hera, causing him to slay his family, Hercules was instructed by the Delphic oracle to serve King Eurytheus of Mycenae and complete his 10 labors. This Herculean silver round series pays tribute to the 12 labors that Hercules was ordered to complete as penance for his crime. There are 12 labors total because two more labors were added to the initial ten, as Eurytheus determined two of the original ten labors were not completed satisfactorily. The ninth labor imposed on Hercules by Eurystheus was to bring back the precious girdle of Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. According to the myth, Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares, the god of war, who had given her the girdle as a gift. It is said that she was ready to give Hercules the girdle upon first meeting him. However, the goddess Hera disguised herself as an Amazon warrior and accused Hercules of trying to abduct Queen Hippolyta, causing the other Amazons to attack his ship. Hercules was forced to kill Hippolyta and take her girdle before escaping back to Mycenae.
The obverse of the round displays a profile view of Hercules, wearing his headdress made from the Nemean Lion. Inscriptions include the weight and purity of the round.
Hippolyta is shown wearing her girdle while gripping her spear on the reverse of the round. Inscriptions include "GIRDLE OF HIPPOLYTA", as well as the Roman numeral for ‘9’.
