This 2008-W 1 oz Proof Silver American Eagle is a wonderful addition to any collection. First introduced in 1986, the 1 oz Silver American Eagle has become the most popular bullion series not only in the United States but in the entire world. There may be no other year in the history of the American Silver Eagle coin program that was more special than 2008. The 2008-W Proof American Silver Eagle has the second lowest mintage in the 21st century, just 700,979 coins. The American Eagle design honors American heritage and timeless traditions.
The obverse depicts “Walking Liberty” design, created by Adolph A. Weinman’s, which was originally used on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle holding an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other with a shield on its chest. In the beak of the bird is a banner that reads “E Pluribus Unum” and above the eagle, there are 13 five-pointed stars representing the original 13 colonies.
