Hercules was the son of the sky and thunder god Zeus and the mortal woman Alcmene. The demigod Hercules is among the most famous characters in Greek mythology, and his adventures have been illustrated in art and literature throughout the centuries. This Hercules silver round series commemorates the 12 labors that Hercules completed as penance for slaying his family, after being driven mad by the goddess Hera. For this terrible crime, he was ordered by the Oracle to obey King Eurytheus and complete his 10 labors. Two more labors were added after Hercules completed the first ten because Eurytheus decided two of the original labors were not completed in the right manner. The twelfth and final labor imposed on Hercules by Eurystheus was to go to the underworld and kidnap the three-headed beast, Cerberus. This would be no easy feat, as Cerberus was said to have three heads of wild dogs, a dragon as a tail, and heads of snakes all down his back. As the guardian of the Underworld, Cerberus belonged to Hades, the god of the realm of the dead. Hades agreed to let Hercules take Cerberus with him, but only if he was able to overpower the beast without a weapon. Sure enough, Hercules was able to subdue the three-headed beast with nothing but his brute strength and brought Cerberus to Eurystheus to complete his final task.

The obverse of the round displays a profile view of Hercules, wearing his headress made from the Nemean Lion, which he slew in his first task. Inscriptions include the weight and purity of the round.

On the reverse of the round, Cerberus leaps into action, fiercely defending the Underworld. Inscriptions include "CERBERUS", as well as the Roman numeral for ‘12’.
