Chances for African Americans to participate in the U.S. military were historically very limited. African American soldiers had to battle exclusion, limiting quotas, and racial discrimination to prove they possessed the intellect, abilities and special skills to be considered successful fighters. Caving into political pressure exerted by the black press and various civil rights groups, the United States Army Air Corps (Air Force) finally decided to train a small number of African American pilot cadets at Tuskegee University. The training took place primarily at Moton Field, the only training facility for African American pilot candidates during the second World War. The great success experienced by the Tuskegee Airmen proved to the public that African Americans could become effective military leaders and pilots when given the opportunity, and paved the way for the desegregation in the military.
The obverse of the coin features the bust of George Washington, our country’s first president, surrounded by inscriptions.
The reverse of the coin depicts a Tuskegee Airman in uniform, preparing to join his fellow pilots in the sky. The pilot looks up towards two P-51 Mustangs flying overhead, with the Moton Field control tower standing in the background. The inscription “THEY FOUGHT TWO WARS” refers to the simultaneous battles the Tuskegee Airman fought during WWII: fascism abroad and discrimination at home.
