The American Eagle coins began in 1986, and it was so named for their famous reverse design. So, the 1986-2020 US Mint gold and silver American Eagle coins are now a completed series. However, the name still befits this lovely Type 2 American Silver Eagle because the reverse continues to spotlight the American mascot. Because of the 35th anniversary, the US Mint created a new reverse for both the American Gold and Silver Eagles. This major change arose because, according to law, the Treasury can only change the design of a coin once within a certain timespan. Therefore, the US Mint meticulously created this new reverse for 2021, including anti-counterfeit security features to make the Silver Eagles more secure and competitive in the world silver coin market. The reeded edge security feature appears as a “gap” variation in the coin’s edge to better secure the coin. Additionally, the obverse has been further modified to more closely resemble the original Adolph A Weinman “Walking Liberty” design used on the 1916-1947 silver half dollar. Please note, the platinum and Palladium American Eagle coins will not be changed at this time.
