First debuting in 1986, American Gold Eagle Coins have maintained their high demand and popularity for both collectors and investors alike. As the official gold bullion coin of the US, this 2021 Type 2 Gold Eagle coin is particularly special because it is the first major redesign of the entire program. This new release also means the 1986-early 2021 gold and silver coins are a completed first collection. However, the platinum and palladium eagle coins are not being redesigned at this time. The obverse will remain mostly the same with slight modifications, however, both the silver and gold editions now depict the bald eagle in a more realistic form. The obverse of the Type 2 Gold Eagle coin was modified to display a resurrected version of Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ illustration. Modified details can be seen on the Capitol building, stars, Liberty’s torch, the sun rays, and other elements per the detailing of the original bronze cast. Lady Liberty proudly strides forward with a flaming torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. These two objects combine to signify the concept of peace through strength. Rays of sunlight radiate from the US Capitol behind her.

The reverse of the Type 2 Gold Eagle features a close-up image of the left side of a bald eagle’s head. Inscriptions surround the eagle including the country, weight, purity, denomination, “E Pluribus Unum”, and “In God We Trust”.
