About the New Zealand Mint

About the Series

This Disney coin series kicked off in 2014 to commemorate popular Disney characters, beloved worldwide. These coins are legal tender on the island of Niue, a small country 1500 miles off the northeast coast of New Zealand. The series has sold steadily and provided an increased awareness of Niue, the premiere, Mr. Toke Talagi, stated. Niue signed a contract with the New Zealand Mint in 2008, an agreement that has worked out very well for both parties. The mint has issued this high-quality series for the last three years, which has steadily grown in popularity around the world.

Steamboat Willie

Steamboat Willie was the first film to ever feature the iconic Mickey Mouse character. Released in 1928, it is considered to be a landmark in the history of film. This was also the first Disney cartoon that had synchronized sound, with a musical score and sounds made by the characters. Mickey’s girlfriend, Minnie Mouse, also made her debut in this famous film.

This coin is crafted of .999 fine silver and has a limited mintage of only 250,000 worldwide. It is a rare collectible and a great addition to any collection. It is available in either gold or silver options and weighs one troy ounce. Carrying a $2 NZD denomination, it comes in a protective plastic flip. Multiples of 25 are packaged in plastic tubes and a lot of 250 comes inside a monster box. This edition was graded a perfect score of 70 by the PCGS grading services within the first 30 days of its release.

The reverse features a famous moment from the film, when Mickey first entered on a ship, grinning at the wheel, which was the first time viewers met this iconic character. The purity and Disney copyright mark are around the bottom edge, and “NZM” is engraved behind Mickey. The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, inscribed with the country name and face value.
