Perth Mint Lunar Year of the Rabbit Gold Coins

The Perth Mint Lunar Gold Coins program has become a Perth Mint tradition that celebrates each of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals from the Lunar Calendar. These Lunar Gold coins have been struck since 1999 and have accrued an international following. As a result, these coins have been minted every year. So far, the Year of the Rabbit gold coins were only made for 1999 and 2011. The next release for this notable program with the rabbit will be for 2023.

PERTH MINT YEAR OF THE RABBIT GOLD COIN DESIGN

The Perth Mint Year of the Rabbit gold coins are made with .9999 pure gold and are manufactured in multiple sizes. This particular coin only has released for 1999 and 2011, but it will have a new design for the Perth Mint’s 3rd Lunar Year Series in 2023. Annually, the Perth Mint Lunar Gold coins’ reverse always contains the "P" mintmark, the Chinese symbol for the animal of the year (Rabbit “”), and the inscription for the animal year ("Year of the Rabbit”). The obverse of the Perth Mint Lunar Gold Coins always displays Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by inscriptions regarding the denomination, weight, and purity.

2011 COIN DESIGN

Released for the Perth Mint Lunar Series II collection, the second year of the Rabbit gold coins. The design for 2011 showcases a textured rabbit surrounded by cabbage and a pot filled with tied bags. The Chinese character for the rabbit appears above the crouched rabbit’s head, and beneath it is the inscription “Year of the Rabbit”. The obverse displays the Ian Rank-Broadley image of Queen Elizabeth II. She also is bordered by the inscriptions that note her name, the country of issue, year, face value, and the coin’s weight, purity, and metal.

1999 COIN DESIGN

From the Perth Mint Lunar Series I collection, the first release of the Year of the Rabbit gold coins was the first release of the series ever. This Peth Mint Lunar Gold Coin features a stately rabbit calmly sitting on a grassy plain. It looks to the left of the coin. In the sky above its body is the Chinese character for rabbit, and on the left side of the coin is the year of issue. Underneath the rabbit lies inscriptions remarking the weight, purity, and metal. The obverse contains the image of Queen Elizabeth II as captured by Ian Rank-Broadley.

ANCIENT CHINESE ZODIAC CALENDAR - THE RABBIT

The Chinese zodiac animals are in a particular order due to a race the Jade Emporer once ordered for the animals to his party across the river. The rabbit came in fourth place behind the Tiger, the Ox, and the first animal, the Mouse/Rat. The rabbit got across the river to the party by navigating across rocks, a floating log, and then by swimming. In such a rush to get to the party, the rabbit sped past the Jade Emporer and into the forest where it collapsed to rest.

Someone who is born under the Year of the Rabbit is kind and quiet but confident, strong, and responsible.  The birth years for this sign are 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, and 2023. Purchase your Year of the Rabbit gold coins either as a standalone piece or to continue your collection! The Perth Mint Lunar Gold Coins are also lovely presents for those who are born under the Year of the Rabbit or those who enjoy the zodiac.
